So this kitten turned up and decided to move in with us a few months ago. Our dogs loved her, our cats hated her. We've been looking for a new home for her and today we took her. She is the only cat in the household and has two dog siblings to help her settle in. She is going to have a great life, and can now be the cat she was supposed to be. Good luck Squirt, we will miss you ❤️

Soon our hillsides will be covered by almond blossom, it's a remarkable sight and one we look forward to every year. These particular trees are always early and the bees love them. I do fear for these ones though because we are due a big drop in temperature from Wednesday across Spain, including the Alpujarras 🥶

These two swapped characters yesterday, roll reversal on behaviour 😇😈
Rita found her inner Shepherd and stayed guarding me while I took photos. Usually she runs off on her own adventures, more often the inner husky has a stronger pull.
Arko found and listened to his inner husky and disappeared on his own adventure for an hour! Usually he stays beside me while I take photos.

The Golden eagle is an almost daily sight for me here in Lanjaron in the Granada province. Our work predominantly in the Sierra Nevada mountains of Spain and Alpujarra (the foothills of the Sierra Nevada) bring me into regular contact with the flora and fauna of our area.

Isn't it great when you come upon an unexpected plant. Aquilegia vulgaris L. subsp. nevadensis is an endemic species, classified as vulnerable and is on the Red List of the Vascular Flora of Andalucia. I only know of a couple of areas where this plant grows, usually see it in early June, but not this year it's out and flowering already I expect due to the dry winter and spring we have had.

On Tuesday we found 4 of the 6 Gentians in the Sierra Nevada mountains. It's highly likely we saw 5, the two tube gentians are very similar. Some of these flowers are so tiny, most people don't see them. Info on each picture.

Gentianella tenella (Lapland Gentian). Grows between 2800 and 3200m. It has a wide distribution but is classed as a threatened species in the Sierra Nevada.
Gentiana boryi. Grows between 2200 and 3200m. I believe this only grows in Iberia and only on two other mountain ranges. It is classed as a vulnerable species.
Gentiana pneumonanthe subsp. depressa (Marsh Gentian). It grows between 2200 and 3200m. It is endemic to the Sierra Nevada and is classed as a vulnerable species.
Gentiana sierrae (Spring Gentian). Grows between 1700 and 3200m. It is endemic to the Sierra Nevada.

Some nature shots from our recent outing into the Sierra Nevada mountains. Vasar de Mulhacen, a night on the Collado de Siete Lagunas and all the way down, down, down, 1700m down to Trevelez. We were going to be walking and spending the night in a reliable place for seeing the Griffon Vulture. I hoped that adding the extra weight to my pack, ie the enormous lens and camera, that I wouldn't just be taking it for a walk for 2 days but would actually use it. The Griffon Vultures didn't let me down ❤️ 17 yrs walking in these mountains I am learning where the wildlife hangs out

The European Bee Eaters have been passing through en-mass over the past few weeks heading off to their wintering grounds in Africa. Our local populations left a long time ago, these passing through now are from further north. I was enjoying watching them feed up for their journey until one hit the alarm button, they all gathered together and shot off. Wise birds as a Peregrine Falcon had decided to join them!

I forgot about the bird and concentrated on the movement, watching for ages as this thing flopped about on the surface. I was baffled by what I was seeing, something twigged in my head hey that has to be a Sunfish. Today I did some research and yep I can confidently say it was a Sunfish.

Another scene from down on the coast the other day. This dog posed so perfectly it was impossible not to take a picture of it with the owner who was fishing.

The almost silhouette of a dog stood behind it's owner who is holding a long fishing rod and is fishing off the end of a wall. The calm grey Mediterranean sea and grey sky.

This is such a striking little bird. Not one I see very often as it's mainly down at the coast and well we don't go there very often. However we were at the coast yesterday and came across a small group of Common Waxbill, I managed to get lots of out of focus shots of the group 😂 but managed get this one on it's own in focus.

A small finch bird perched on a piece of cane. The bird has a red bill, long tail, and a red eye stripe. It has fine bars running through it's plumage with a white throat. This one has a pinkish flush to it underpart. The cane behind the bird is mostly blurred out.

There is yellow skin at the base of the bill and some white. The plumage is mostly dark. The closed wings have a scaled pattern.

At 2500m in the Sierra Nevada mountains of Spain yesterday I came across these hooligans (Coal Tits) rolling around on the floor. It was like scene from a film 😂 They were trying to kill eachother, I had to split them up in the end, remind them they had to eat plenty, rather than fight, to make it through the night! No idea what the argument could be about, do you?

A pair of birds, Coal Tits, engaged in a fight, rolling around on the wet, snowy icy floor.

Some of early flowering wild orchids so far this season. The orchids seem to be all over the place with who is flowering when at the moment. I guess with drought conditions for a few years is taking it's toll. Giant Orchid (Himantoglossum robertianum), Fan-lipped Orchid (Orchis collina) and Sombre Bee Orchid (Ophrys fusca)

The picture consists of two small Giant Orchid (Himantoglossum robertianum). A thick green stem holds a bunch of flowers that sort of look like human bodies with alien heads! The edge of the arms and legs are brownish blending into pale pink, some with dark pink dots, with white in the centre. Some flowers still tightly rolled up waiting for flower.
The picture shows one spike of Fan-lipped Orchid (Orchis collina). The orchid is on a slender green stem with flowers coming off in different directions. The flowers remind me of angels, they have a pink skirt with greenish pinkish wings. The centre is white. The back ground is green grass with dew drops on them, some in focus some not.
The picture consists of one taller Giant Orchid (Himantoglossum robertianum). A thick green stem holds a bunch of flowers that sort of look like human bodies with alien heads! The edge of the arms and legs are brownish blending into pale pink, some with dark pink dots and stripes, with white in the centre. Some flowers still tightly rolled up waiting for flower. The background is out of focus short grass.
The picture shows one spike of Sombre Bee Orchid (Ophrys fusca). The background is an out of focus rock. There is a yellow green slender short stem with a handful of flowers on it. The flower shape is sort of human body shape, arms, body and legs are dark brown, purple short hair looking. The centre upward is pale whiteish blending to darker grey. All flowers are edged in yellow. The one flower looks to have a face in it! These flowers are very difficult to describe, but I hope you get an idea.

We are in a drought in some reservoirs are in single figures of their potential capacity. This past week, and this weekend, has been wet, it's been wonderful. It won't cure our drought but it will go towards helping us get through another summer. Perhaps the most exciting bird we saw that day was the Little Bustard. We saw 3 different male birds. This bird is quite difficult to see, besides it's camoflauge, it's habitat is being destroyed so there are not many of them left in our province. Sadly the thing that is destroying the habitat the most are solar farms, thousands and thousands. It's horrific to see.

A ploughed field with a Little Bustard male bird just off centre left. The bird blends in really well to the brown ploughed field.

I can hear you thinking "Why is she posting this awful shot?" It is rather exciting. In this picture there are 3 species of vulture. Taken at 2200m in Sierra Nevada mountains, in the Granada province. Among the more common Griffon vultures there is 1 Black & 1 Bearded vulture. The Black is a very occasional visitor to our province. The Bearded is part of a successful reintroduction programme in . Not many have seen this in our province

A photograph showing mostly Griffon vultures flying around, some with a blue sky background and some with the bare mountain with a patch of snow background. The bird circled in red (top left) is a Bearded vulture (the bone breaker), they are trying to breed in the Sierra Nevada after a successful reintroduction programe in Andalucia. The bird circled in purple, just above the skyline on the right, is a Black vulture, not often seen in the Granada province. The birds were a long way off, it's a poor photo, but a record shot of a scene not many people have seen in the Granada province.

Around here Golden Oriole are shy birds making them really difficult to photograph well. Another season has passed without a good opportunity. The closest I had was with this family group just before they left for Africa. They were still out of range of the camera and were messing around before the sun came up so light was poor. Anyway regardless of that, how many can you spot in this picture?

The sky was awful for bird photography. But what mattered was the encounter. It's always so special when an unexpected wildlife encounter happens.

A Bearded vulture flying in the sky. Photographer looking up at the bird. The sky is a light grey colour. The birds is mostly brown with a wedge tail.

At 2100m we found a handful of Gentiana sierrae flowering and some still in bud. These should not be flowering at the end of November.

A blue flower very low to the ground. Five blue petals and white centre. The flower is surrounded by green alpine vegetation.

A beautiful new to us dog walk today. Four dogs and four humans very happy. The winter weather was perfect and in traditional style we ended the walk at a bar 🍻

A white dog playing in the water on the edge of a lake with a stick in her mouth. The sun is making the water glisten. Vegetation surrounds the lake. I don't know what happened to the top of her tail in the photo haha
Three people and four dogs walking on a dirt track above and to the side of a lake. The lake is blue with a few ripples on it. Trees and hillsides surround the lake, some wind turbines can be seen in the distance. The sky is blue.
A blue lake surrounded by hillsides covered in trees and shrubs. In for foreground a bit of grass and some autumn coloured shrubs.
A rubbish shot of one of the dogs, the husky, bouncing through the lake water. It's just his body and tail on the right of the picture haha

Can you spot the face in the mountains? It looks like a giant laying down. One from our walk on Tuesday.

At the top a light blue winter sky with high cloud whisking through it. Below the sky are lightly snow covered mountains of the Sierra Nevada. In front of those mountains are more mountains but one looks like a human face, side view. Still coming towards the viewer are forested hills and on the front left of the picture is a green pine tree.

Orchid season is starting 🙂 I found the first of the Sombre Bee Orchids (Ophrys fusca) yesterday. They were living up to their name and were in the shade, this particular area gets no sun this time of year, they make it very difficult to photograph them. I've seen plenty of rosettes around and about so many more to come yet, some may get some sun and make a brighter picture!

A small thin green stem holding two Sombre Bee orchids. The background is blurred vegetation.

The advance party of one! Some of the early almond trees are starting to flower. By February the hillsides of the Alpujarra will be sparkling with the blossom from these trees.

A picture of an almond tree flower. Five rounded white petals with 5 green very small inner petals, splashes of pink at the centre. The flower is attached to a small branch with a flower bud coming off to the right.

As the sun set on Christmas day we were treated to a great view of the mountains in north Africa.

Picture at sunset looking over hills and mountains in Spain (Europe), down to the Mediterranean sea and across to the mountains on the horizon just below the changing colour of thin clouds. The mountains on the horizon are on the Rif mountains of Morocco on the continent of Africa.
