@Paws2Trail that's good to hear that there is no obvious reason. Great idea to have a plan in case something happens while you are out and about. My friends dog started with seizures, like Gypsy, no obvious reason health wise. A year or more later they've just figured it out, she's allergic to the sausages and a type of ham she was getting her medication (for something else). Stopped feeding her these items, no seizure since, crazy 🤷 Hopefully just a one off for Gypsy.

Orchid season is starting 🙂 I found the first of the Sombre Bee Orchids (Ophrys fusca) yesterday. They were living up to their name and were in the shade, this particular area gets no sun this time of year, they make it very difficult to photograph them. I've seen plenty of rosettes around and about so many more to come yet, some may get some sun and make a brighter picture!

This pale form Booted Eagle flew over the house yesterday as I was fetching the washing in. I had to run back into the house, grab the camera, change settings, run back outside, the eagle was way above by then. Happens everytime, you'd think I'd have learnt by now!

We had an amazing encounter with a Bearded vulture (Lammergeier) yesterday in the Sierra Nevada mountains. Of course I had the small point & press camera rather than my usual birding lens and camera. The sky was awful for bird photography. But what mattered was the encounter. It's always so special when an unexpected wildlife encounter happens.

I enjoy my Four O Clock flowers seeing what colours they have decided to come out in. They are mostly multicoloured and not often just one solid colour. Mine don't flower at four o clock they are much later as the sun goes down. Proper name Mirabilis jalapa, or another common name The marvel of Peru.

Another windy day in Lanjaron. It started to build while I was out with Arko this morning. Yesterday was crazy with a couple of gusts over 75 km/hr, hoping today won't be so bad even if the alerts are still being activated. I don't think the greenhouse will survive another onslaught like yesterday.

Isn't it great when you come upon an unexpected plant. Aquilegia vulgaris L. subsp. nevadensis is an endemic species, classified as vulnerable and is on the Red List of the Vascular Flora of Andalucia. I only know of a couple of areas where this plant grows, usually see it in early June, but not this year it's out and flowering already I expect due to the dry winter and spring we have had.

At 2500m in the Sierra Nevada mountains of Spain yesterday I came across these hooligans (Coal Tits) rolling around on the floor. It was like scene from a film 😂 They were trying to kill eachother, I had to split them up in the end, remind them they had to eat plenty, rather than fight, to make it through the night! What else did we see 🤔#Lammergeier that's what we saw, not 1 but 2 of these beauties ❤ We watched them away in the distance as they 'played' in the sky mirroring eachother flying. I only have record shots because they were too far away, when one did come reasonably close it took us by surprise and I wasn't ready 🤣 But for me it was the highlight of our trip, It's an amazing privilege to have seen this pair.

View from this mornings dog walk, we went to the ermita again. I love how the dogs place themselves for a photo when we visit. There was much excitement in the early hours of the morning, we had a band of storms roll through. We were woken not long after 1am and enjoyed hours of thunder rolling around the hills and a spectacular light show. Sadly not much rain fell. It was wonderful to experience 'weather' again after a seemingly never ending summer. #dogs #dogsofmastodon #husky #rescuedogs

Never a nice sight to see, but it always seems worse at night. Around 8.30pm a wildfire started on our mountain, we were safe, and thankfully those whose properties were involved were okay too. Wildfire just seems very wrong in winter.

Perhaps the most exciting bird we saw that day was the Little Bustard. We saw 3 different male birds. This bird is quite difficult to see, besides it's camoflauge, it's habitat is being destroyed so there are not many of them left in our province. Sadly the thing that is destroying the habitat the most are solar farms, thousands and thousands. This boy still has the stitches in his eye. Because he has leishmaniasis the wound is taking longer than usual to heal, but the tumour removal site is looking good. That's why we are getting so many trips down to the coast, vet visits.

@JimsPhotos Nightingales and Golden Orioles are the main songsters (and the hardest to photograph), along with the more abundant Chaffinch, Blackcap, Blackbird, Cirl Bunting and Goldfinch, to name a few. Sadly the noise from our local fiesta is drowning out the bird song at the moment 🙄

The wonderful and very vocal Southern Lapwing, possibly the Patagonian subspeices (chilensis/fretensis)? I need someone who knows more than I do to confirm or disagree with that. I like how this shot shows the spur on the wing just pointing through the back chest feathers. These can be used defending it's young or territory. Quite the feisty bird 💪

Polar air has marched it's way to southern Spain, even dropping some precipitation along the way. We went to take some photo's #Lanjaron showing the snowy Sierra Nevada #mountains above. Our usual place for this shot took us into an area that was devastated by wildfire in September last year. It was horrifying to watch then, It was horrifying to wander through today. The loss of wildlife, nature & livelihoods is beyond words.

The endemic Parnassius apollo subsp nevadensis butterfly is now on the wing in the Sierra Nevada mountains. Such a graceful big butterfly and one that is suffering effects of the warming mountains, they need the cooler temperature and are moving higher up in search of that! It lives above 1800m. We encountered this one yesterday at 2400m which was having a good feast on the wild Thyme.

The European Bee Eaters have been passing through en-mass over the past few weeks heading off to their wintering grounds in Africa. Our local populations left a long time ago, these passing through now are from further north. I was enjoying watching them feed up for their journey until one hit the alarm button, they all gathered together and shot off. Wise birds as a Peregrine Falcon had decided to join them!

Taken at 2200m in Sierra Nevada mountains, in the Granada province. Among the more common Griffon vultures there is 1 Black & 1 Bearded vulture. @Paws2Trail That's fun. Yep some dogs just are not into the whole running thing. Khumbu was able to recognise what harness he was wearing so what job was required of him, normal for a daily walk or x-back for skijoring. Hopefully Tonttu will figure it out quickly too.

This is such a striking little bird. Not one I see very often as it's mainly down at the coast and well we don't go there very often. However we were at the coast yesterday and came across a small group of Common Waxbill, I managed to get lots of out of focus shots of the group 😂 but managed get this one on it's own in focus.

We took the dogs to the river for a walk today. It's really a stream, not rivers how we know them to be, but hey it's a close to a river you get around here. Anyway for the summer months they partially dam part of it to make a pool. Two years ago we taught our dogs to swim here and each year we visit a couple of times. I always get a thrill when I am able to spend time with these wonderful birds, natures clean up crew. This bird was seen at first light after we had climbed a peak. Griffon vulture (Gyps fulvus), also known as the Eurasian Griffon, is a large short tailed vulture with excellent eyesight and in flight can spot an animal carcass from a distance in excess of five km (info from Bird Fact).

The Bearded Vulture lives mainly on a diet of bone marrow. It can swallow bones where its powerful digestive system quickly dissolves the bone. It is probably known more for taking larger bones up into the sky and dropping them to the ground to smash into smaller pieces.

Six week check up for Rita - x-ray shows complete healing of the break in her pelvis 🙏 She has been signed off 🥳 Tomorrow we can start short walks with her on a lead. She had a nice sleep 😴 at the vets for an hour and half sleeping off the drugs and is now doing the same at home 🥰 The picture is of when she was given her sleepy drugs before the x-ray was taken.

Bit of info for those who don't know about this bird
They have a number of names Lammergeier, Bearded Vulture and Quebrantahuesos (bone breaker). It is/was one of the rarest birds in Europe.
Once upon a time it was a common bird in Andalucia, but thanks to poison, poaching and hunting the bird became extinct in Andalucia during the 80's. There has been a successful but slow (takes many years for these birds to reach maturity) re-introduction programme.

We were going to be walking and spending the night in a reliable place for seeing the Griffon Vulture. I hoped that adding the extra weight to my pack, ie the enormous lens and camera, that I wouldn't just be taking it for a walk for 2 days but would actually use it. @Paws2Trail They called the eye markings spectacles 🤓 which became more obvious the older she got. She was a great introduction to the breed and not your classic looking sibe. She was the last of her litter to find a home, she jumped straight into my arms ❤️ The two pictures are her parents, Mum classic Sibe with the mask, Dad very handsome who Gypsy took after in looks.

So this kitten turned up and decided to move in with us a few months ago. Our dogs loved her, our cats hated her. We've been looking for a new home for her and today we took her. She is the only cat in the household and has two dog siblings to help her settle in. She is going to have a great life, and can now be the cat she was supposed to be. Good luck Squirt, we will miss you ❤️

When I visit Patagonia, one of the many joys about being there is getting to see these birds up close. The Andean Condor, wow what a bird it is. Weighing in at 15kg and a wingspan up to over 3m it is one of the largest flying birds in the world.

On Friday we said our final goodbye to Mum 💔

Through the last 20 years she had 10 cancer diagnosis, she never complained, never looked for sympathy or loaded her troubles onto anyone. She was always smiling, positive and continued to live her life. Most people would not have known how poorly she had been at times. She has been inspiration and I will miss her enormously.

I will take a leaf out of Mum's book and live life with a smile, courage, strength, love and happiness ❤️

The best vegetarian pizza I have found anywhere in the world came from La Cervecería in El Chalten, Argentina's Patagonia. There was no skimping on the veggies like every other veggie pizza I've come across. Each year I have visited it has been the same standard. To all restaurant owners who sell pizza, take note 😁

Not quite the morning the dogs thought they were having. Both Rita and Arko at the vets. Rita to get a dental and Arko to have a small tumour removed from his eye. I don't think the dogs are going to talk to us again 😬 There is a lot of complaint coming from both of them already. I fear Arko will give us husky hell once his legs have recovered sufficiently 😂

On Tuesday we found 4 of the 6 Gentians in the Sierra Nevada mountains. It's highly likely we saw 5, the two tube gentians are very similar. Some of these flowers are so tiny, most people don't see them. Info on each picture.

@CatherineBabault I've found with the birds in Patagonia they have little fear. I believe this to be because they are not persecuted as they are in other parts of the world. In Spain birds are terrified of people. I'm sure also some birds can manipulate humans into giving up some food.

The upper Lanjaron valley seen from the top of Cerro de Caballo (3009m) in the Sierra Nevada. We saw few signs of wildlife up this high now, only the real hardy souls like the Iberian Ibex are still around. The 3 highest peaks of the mountain range can be seen in the background with bits of snow hanging on. It was very very cold 🥶

Around here Golden Oriole are shy birds making them really difficult to photograph well. Another season has passed without a good opportunity. The closest I had was with this family group just before they left for Africa. They were still out of range of the camera and were messing around before the sun came up so light was poor. Down at the coast yesterday I was trying to photograph a bird flying above the sea when I was aware of movement in the water. I forgot about the bird and concentrated on the movement, watching for ages as this thing flopped about on the surface. I was baffled by what I was seeing, something twigged in my head hey that has to be a Sunfish. Today I did some research and yep I can confidently say it was a Sunfish. #photography #Mediterranean #sea #sealife #spain #wildlife
