So this kitten turned up and decided to move in with us a few months ago. Our dogs loved her, our cats hated her. We've been looking for a new home for her and today we took her. She is the only cat in the household and has two dog siblings to help her settle in. She is going to have a great life, and can now be the cat she was supposed to be. Good luck Squirt, we will miss you ❤️

Polar air has marched it's way to southern Spain, even dropping some precipitation along the way. We went to take some photo's #Lanjaron showing the snowy Sierra Nevada #mountains above. Our usual place for this shot took us into an area that was devastated by wildfire in September last year. It was horrifying to watch then, It was horrifying to wander through today. The loss of wildlife, nature & livelihoods is beyond words.

@Paws2Trail They called the eye markings spectacles 🤓 which became more obvious the older she got. She was a great introduction to the breed and not your classic looking sibe. She was the last of her litter to find a home, she jumped straight into my arms ❤️ The two pictures are her parents, Mum classic Sibe with the mask, Dad very handsome who Gypsy took after in looks.

Isn't it great when you come upon an unexpected plant. Aquilegia vulgaris L. subsp. nevadensis is an endemic species, classified as vulnerable and is on the Red List of the Vascular Flora of Andalucia. I only know of a couple of areas where this plant grows, usually see it in early June, but not this year it's out and flowering already I expect due to the dry winter and spring we have had.

On Tuesday we found 4 of the 6 Gentians in the Sierra Nevada mountains. It's highly likely we saw 5, the two tube gentians are very similar. Some of these flowers are so tiny, most people don't see them. Info on each picture.

On Friday we said our final goodbye to Mum 💔

Through the last 20 years she had 10 cancer diagnosis, she never complained, never looked for sympathy or loaded her troubles onto anyone. She was always smiling, positive and continued to live her life. Most people would not have known how poorly she had been at times. She has been inspiration and I will miss her enormously.

I will take a leaf out of Mum's book and live life with a smile, courage, strength, love and happiness ❤️

I enjoy my Four O Clock flowers seeing what colours they have decided to come out in. They are mostly multicoloured and not often just one solid colour. Mine don't flower at four o clock they are much later as the sun goes down. Proper name Mirabilis jalapa, or another common name The marvel of Peru.

We took the dogs to the river for a walk today. It's really a stream, not rivers how we know them to be, but hey it's a close to a river you get around here. I only have record shots because they were too far away, when one did come reasonably close it took us by surprise and I wasn't ready 🤣 But for me it was the highlight of our trip, It's an amazing privilege to have seen this pair.

The European Bee Eaters have been passing through en-mass over the past few weeks heading off to their wintering grounds in Africa. Our local populations left a long time ago, these passing through now are from further north. I was enjoying watching them feed up for their journey until one hit the alarm button, they all gathered together and shot off. Wise birds as a Peregrine Falcon had decided to join them!

@Paws2Trail that's good to hear that there is no obvious reason. Great idea to have a plan in case something happens while you are out and about. My friends dog started with seizures, like Gypsy, no obvious reason health wise. A year or more later they've just figured it out, she's allergic to the sausages and a type of ham she was getting her medication (for something else). Stopped feeding her these items, no seizure since, crazy 🤷 Hopefully just a one off for Gypsy.

Six week check up for Rita - x-ray shows complete healing of the break in her pelvis 🙏 She has been signed off 🥳 Tomorrow we can start short walks with her on a lead. She had a nice sleep 😴 at the vets for an hour and half sleeping off the drugs and is now doing the same at home 🥰 The picture is of when she was given her sleepy drugs before the x-ray was taken.

Another windy day in Lanjaron. It started to build while I was out with Arko this morning. Yesterday was crazy with a couple of gusts over 75 km/hr, hoping today won't be so bad even if the alerts are still being activated. I don't think the greenhouse will survive another onslaught like yesterday.

The upper Lanjaron valley seen from the top of Cerro de Caballo (3009m) in the Sierra Nevada. We saw few signs of wildlife up this high now, only the real hardy souls like the Iberian Ibex are still around. The 3 highest peaks of the mountain range can be seen in the background with bits of snow hanging on. It was very very cold 🥶

@Rasta This one is the Capra pyrenaica subsp. hispanica. We have the biggest population in the whole of Spain living in our mountains of the Sierra Nevada, just under 18,000.

This was a particularly handsome Gallot's lizard (Gallotia galloti palmae). He hung out with many of his relatives at the hotel we were staying at while walking with friends for a week on the Canary island of La Palma.

@CatherineBabault I've found with the birds in Patagonia they have little fear. I believe this to be because they are not persecuted as they are in other parts of the world. In Spain birds are terrified of people. I'm sure also some birds can manipulate humans into giving up some food.

Another Patagonian beauty and the original Woody Woodpecker, introducing Mr and Mrs Magellanic Woodpecker. It is the largest South American Woodpecker and one of the largest in the world.

Never a nice sight to see, but it always seems worse at night. Around 8.30pm a wildfire started on our mountain, we were safe, and thankfully those whose properties were involved were okay too. Wildfire just seems very wrong in winter.

Not quite the morning the dogs thought they were having. Both Rita and Arko at the vets. Rita to get a dental and Arko to have a small tumour removed from his eye. I don't think the dogs are going to talk to us again 😬 There is a lot of complaint coming from both of them already. I fear Arko will give us husky hell once his legs have recovered sufficiently 😂

When I visit Patagonia, one of the many joys about being there is getting to see these birds up close. The Andean Condor, wow what a bird it is. Weighing in at 15kg and a wingspan up to over 3m it is one of the largest flying birds in the world.

Down at the coast yesterday I was trying to photograph a bird flying above the sea when I was aware of movement in the water. I forgot about the bird and concentrated on the movement, watching for ages as this thing flopped about on the surface. I was baffled by what I was seeing, something twigged in my head hey that has to be a Sunfish. Today I did some research and yep I can confidently say it was a Sunfish. #photography #Mediterranean #sea #sealife #spain #wildlife

This is such a striking little bird. Not one I see very often as it's mainly down at the coast and well we don't go there very often. However we were at the coast yesterday and came across a small group of Common Waxbill, I managed to get lots of out of focus shots of the group 😂 but managed get this one on it's own in focus.

This boy still has the stitches in his eye. Because he has leishmaniasis the wound is taking longer than usual to heal, but the tumour removal site is looking good. That's why we are getting so many trips down to the coast, vet visits.

While out and about the other day we bumped into this beautiful female Kestrel. She was sat on top of a tree watching for potential food, which she spotted and flew off to try to catch, I lost sight of her.

At 2500m in the Sierra Nevada mountains of Spain yesterday I came across these hooligans (Coal Tits) rolling around on the floor. It was like scene from a film 😂 They were trying to kill eachother, I had to split them up in the end, remind them they had to eat plenty, rather than fight, to make it through the night! No idea what the argument could be about, do you?

We are in a drought in #Spain some reservoirs are in single figures of their potential capacity. This past week, and this weekend, has been wet, it's been wonderful. It won't cure our drought but it will go towards helping us get through another summer. Perhaps the most exciting bird we saw that day was the Little Bustard. We saw 3 different male birds. This bird is quite difficult to see, besides it's camoflauge, it's habitat is being destroyed so there are not many of them left in our province. Sadly the thing that is destroying the habitat the most are solar farms, thousands and thousands. I took a sneaky photo of our new neighbours yesterday. I certainly prefer them to human neighbours 😅 These two male Spanish Ibex have taken up residence on a big rock opposite our house. I think I found out who ate my bulbs!

I can hear you thinking "Why is she posting this awful shot?" It is rather exciting. In this picture there are 3 species of vulture. Taken at 2200m in Sierra Nevada mountains, in the Granada province. Among the more common Griffon vultures there is 1 Black & 1 Bearded vulture. The Black is a very occasional visitor to our province. The Bearded is part of a successful reintroduction programme in #Andalucia. While back in the UK in May I watched a pair of Blue tits who had nested in a bird house in my Dad's garden going backwards and forwards with food. I didn't get to see the babies fledge, but my Dad reports that they did. Does anyone know if they will have two broods in a season or just the one?

I love seeing these little insects. Thread-winged Lacewing (Nemoptera bipennis) are like fairies. I saw quite a few of these flying around on our recent overnight trip into the Sierra Nevada.

I always get a thrill when I am able to spend time with these wonderful birds, natures clean up crew. This bird was seen at first light after we had climbed a peak. Griffon vulture (Gyps fulvus), also known as the Eurasian Griffon, is a large short tailed vulture with excellent eyesight and in flight can spot an animal carcass from a distance in excess of five km (info from Bird Fact).
